Under Suspicion
Dvd Review
Endings are important to me. Ive seen many a movie ruined by its 3rd act or ridiculous ending. Thats what i believe turn people off thats seen this movie. Its one of those movies people either love or hate. The first time i saw this movie i was mesmerized and caught in all the way to the ending. Once the credits rolled i was confused and wasnt sure if it all made sense or even fully explained to a satisfactory degree. Since then ive given it multiple rewatches and the ending is still somewhat of a mystery but at least i have a plausible theory on what happened.
No one can deny the brilliance of the rest of the movie. The acting is superb. Its Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman at their finest. Thomas Jane is also good and Monica Bellucci is just the most beautiful eye candy ever. To say she is hot in the movie is an understatement. It is directed beautifully by Stephen Hopkins with easily his finest movie to date.
The movies plot is about Gene Hackmans character finds a 12 year old girl murdered while on a jog. He becomes the main suspect and is questioned by the police detectives Morgan Freeman and Thomas Jane on the night of an important fundraiser party. The movie is told in flashback scenes by Hackman with a unique perspective that ive never seen done before. The movie then begins to unfold hidden secrets about Hackman and his wife (Belluci) that make it have a very interesting mystery element to it. Clues to their torn relationship between him and his wife are littered throughout the movie but have to be pieced together to fully understand it. Her jealousy and suspicion of him and his actions are a key element to the full story. The dialogue is well written but a good portion of the story is told by the facial expressions and actions by the actors. It has an adequate score for this type of movie and the cinematography of Puerto Rico is beautiful.
The ending is highly controversial and up to interpretation. Go look on the imdb boards for a full lenthy discussion. Its one of the rare movies that combine great acting, great screenplay, while still being up to interepretation but not to the point where its not plausible and too ridiculous to not unfold in the manner it did. Great movie but i recommend to have your thinking cap ready to strap on.

You can never have too much of Monica
