The Toolbox Murders by Tobe Hooper
Right now in my opinion this movie is the king of straight to video horror. I know some of you are going to say how about Session 9 or this movie or that movie. There might be some other straight to videos that are greater and if there are please tell me below. How this movie by this "Master of Horror" actually did not get a theatrical release is beyond me. Just by the poster alone acknowledging the director should have generated at least a few million by itself and with the great word of mouth im sure the dvd sales and rental would have made a few million also.
This movie rocks. Its like i took a time trip and was revisiting a good ol 80's slasher horror flick. The movie starts off with a cool 80's slasher vibe and a scary death scene that sets the movie up. It has awesome jump scares up the ass. It is not a remake at all. It has nothing to do with the old school movie of the same name. The best known star is Angela Bettis from "May" and "Sick Girl". She does a terrific job once again playing an inquisitive apartment attendant.
The movie is mystery whodunit slasher flick but also adds a cool element that is not typical to the slasher genre. I dont want to spoil it but the theres more to the killer than meets the eye. One by one the apartment residents are dying and Angela Bettis is the only one who seems to be noticing. She goes on a sleuth case trying to figure out the mystery of the killer and hotel while trying to still stay alive. Basically its old school, its kick ass and definitely a must see for all slasher fans. I rated this as my favorite horror movie of last year. Rent this but whatever you do stay away from Tobe Hooper's newest movie, "Mortuary" which is a total poo nugget.
