Dying Breed Movie Review
Directed by Jody Dwyer
Starring Leigh Wannell, Nathan Phillips, Mirrah Foulkes, and Melanie Vallejo
Available on dvd on March 31, 2009 as part of the Afterdark Horrorfest III 8 Films to Die For series.
I dont know why I like these horror dvd series. The Afterdark series, Ghost House series, and even the Masters of Horror series are by and large crap. There is usually only 1 or 2 of the dvd's that are actually considered really good. I still end up watching them all in hopes of finding a gem. I would classify this as an above average film for one of these series.
The movie is about this girl who goes to Tasmania in search for answers on how her sister died. Along with her are her b/f, his best friend, and his g/f. They are also on a safari to find the extinct Tasmanian Tiger. When they arrive they meet some very strange locals who are not willing to help out. So the first half of the movie leads you to believe its going to be some sort of monster movie. What it ends up being is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Tasmania Edition. Yep its another crazy cannibal family movie. Which I dont mind if its done right, but theres not really that much original or new that they add to the mix.
The acting and cinematography were definitely above average. It had kind of a gritty Wolf Creek feel to it that I dug. So technically it didnt have any major flaws but the story was just so so. There was one pretty cool kill involving a bear trap and an awesome scene where a dude gets pinned to a tree by an arrow through his face.
Not bad but not necessarily good either. It had a lot of potential that it failed to live up to. On a scale of 1-10 I give this a slashed tire 6.0 out of 10.
