Guard Post aka GP506
Directed by Su-chang Kong
Availability in U.S. unknown
South Korea has some great filmmakers. While not on par with directors such as Wook Park, Kong still does a solid job. I havent seen his previous film R Point yet, so I dont know how it compares to that but I did still enjoy the movie.
The movie is basically about this South Korean guard post thats on the border of the n.Korea/s. Korea border. The movie starts with a crew of soldiers responding to an emergency there. When they arrive everyone is dead but one soldier thats holding an ax and covered with blood. The rest of the movie is flashing back and forth between present time with this guy in charge trying to uncover what happened to lead to this massacre. He finds diaries, recorded tapes and interviews the survivor in attempt to find the answer. The first 45 minutes of the movie it trys to lead you to believe that something supernatural is going on. Around that time you find out that its a virus thats infecting people and making them violent and crazy.
The main problem with the movie is its length and repitition. Its right around 2 hours and a bunch of the movie shows someone get infected, go crazy and then get captured and locked up. Rinse and repeat. The other problem I had is I wish it would have had a little bit more character development for some of the characters, so you can care more about them when things go bad.
The cinematography is great and so is most of the acting. The practical gore effects were pretty damn good also. It had a great claustrophobic feeling but it lacked somthing to make it a must see. If you like non ghost Asian horror movies then I recommend it but for the average person im sure they would be bored to tears. On a scale of 1-10 I give this a smashing your own hand with a pipe 6.9 out of 10.
