Awake Dvd Review What a kick ass little gem I found. I had never even heard of this movie before I saw it, even though it stars big name actors Jessica Alba, Terrence Howard and Anakin Skywalker. Once I heard the synopsis I thought it was going to be a cookie cutter been there done that movie with little or no surprises. Boy I was wrong. This has so many twists and turns that It would make M.Night smile with glee.
The story is basically about this young rich billionaire (Hayden Christenson) that lives in a mansion with his mother and is the head of several companies that are about to do a deal with a huge Japanese company. The problem is he is sick and needs a heart transplant severely. He also has a secret fiancee (Jessica Alba) that he is hiding from his possessive mother. Finally it comes down to the day that his heart arrives and he needs an immediate transplant by his friend and doctor (Terrence Howard). Everything is going by plan until the anesthesia that he is given doesnt put him to sleep but only paralyzes him so he cant move. He is fully aware of the surgery and everything that is going on but is hopeless to do anything about it. But this is far from over cuz there is much more to the story.
Now this kind of movie heavily relies on performance of the actors. Jessica Alba in my opinion is underrated and she fits her role perfectly. She knows how to play a sweet hot girlfriend. Terrence Howard is awesome as always. Hayden does a very good job but is probably the only thing that holds this movie back from being very good to being awesome. I know some people hate him for the Anakin role but I dont hold this against him since those prequels all sucked for other reasons. He's not bad but I could just imagine with a better actor like Ryan Phillipe or Emile Hirsch this movie could have been elevated so much more.
All in all this movie has a short running time and it is edited beautifully. I was on the edge of my seat just waiting for the next reveal to happen. This along with Shattered are my favorite two thriller movies of the year so far. On a scale of 1-10 I give this a "drinking doctor" 8.2 out of 10.
You know i couldnt pass the opportunity to show some Jessica love
