Zebraman Movie Review

Yes another fucked up action fest only Miike can do. For those not familiar with Miike he is one of the greatest and prolific Japanese directors on the planet. Best know for Audition, Ichi the Killer, Happiness of the Katakuris, Visitor Q and dozens of other movies. All I can say is every time you see a Miike movie you never know what you get. Sometimes its a comedy, horror, gangster, action or a strange mix of all of them. This movie in tone and feel reminds me a lot of the Great Yokai War with the fantasy elements toned down some.
Im not sure I fully understand the plot but heres my stab at it. Basically this loser guy who sucks at being a father and a teacher parades around as a superhero named Zebraman. Apparently Zebraman was a TV show that was cancelled when he was a kid. These alien creatures crash landed and took over the bodies of students and took up residence in the gym. Finally 20 some odd years later they are making a move and planning to take over the world. They found the Zebraman scripts and are following the script line by line. Zebraman for some unexplained reason has super powers and its up to him to stop the invading alien forces. The movie is pretty much a comedy with the most of the laughs coming from awkward situations that Zebraman encounters. The suit is super cheesy and when he's walking around in supermarkets its so odd and out of place. Speaking of cheesy the alien creatures look like computer graphics done circa 1985. But this really adds to the flavor of the movie and im sure was done purposefully. I guess its a "never give up" message movie but some of thats lost with all the craziness found in the movie. I love Miike and I thought it was another great addition to his library. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a electric brain 7.9 out of 10.
