Its been forever since ive reviewed any movies but im about to hit it hardcore. Thanks to my Zune I have a chance to watch a lot more movies recently.
Day X is another entry into the "zombie, but not really a zombie but infected people" category. There was a lot of stuff to like in this std horror title. The story while not totally original had a pretty cool twist to it. The movie switches point of views of a scientist that was taping a self confession of the events that were going on and between a group of 11 survivors that were holed up in a steel mill somewhere by Waco, Texas. The survivors are led by a military driver that was on his way to a secret military base thats used for the elite of the country in case of a catastrophic situation. Theres some type of chemical spill which is not shown and 6 out of 7 people get infected and turn into a raging animal bent on killing anything in their path. Over time the body starts to breaks down and limbs stop working.
Overall with the exception of the lead, most of the actors suck pretty bad. Luckily the clever dialogue worked most of the time.
Unfortunately the movies biggest downfall is the lack of action scenes and the few scenes they had were pretty decent on gore but lacked anything dynamic or interesting. Still what the movie lacked in action did somewhat make up for it in realism. The scene where the guy runs out of breath from running had me smiling from ear to ear. The movie is low budget but looks pretty damn good despite that. The zombie make up was adequate and there was a few decent kills.
Overall the movie was pretty ambitious and mostly succeeded. To be honest I dont think the average horror fan would apprecate it but for Zombie lovers like myself I do recommend it. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a "creepy girl that bites you for the antidote" 6.8 out of 10.
