The Prodigy Dvd Review
Man thats an awesome looking cover. It also has some pretty bold tag lines to go along with it. Was it as good as the claims? No, not really but it is definitely a very very solid straight to dvd action movie. Heres the plot synopsis straight from Amazon:
A small-time enforcer unwillingly engages in a deadly battle with a sadistic assassin bent on training him as a successor - or killing him if he refuses - in this explosive and shocking action thriller. Loaded with heart-pumping action and gut-wrenching suspense, The Prodigy is a nonstop thrill-ride about one man's struggle against his own fears and the one willing to exploit them to find what he truly believes and take his place in the grand design.
Maybe I was drinking too much but most of the movie didnt make much sense. To be honest it didnt really matter that much because it was really only worth watching for the action sequences. The gunplay was above average but nothing as close as something like John Woo or other big budget movies. What really stood out was the hand to hand fight choreography. The hero played by Holt Boggs fought a couple times against the main baddie and that was by far the best part of the movie. It was a cross between traditional fighting, knife fighting and with a little martial arts thrown in for good measure.
The cinematography was overall pretty good for this obvious low budget movie. Some of the sound effects were weak and the soundtrack was not very memorable. Some of the things they do are copied from the Saw series and it even has a semi twist ending. The picture quality is above average for std but the sound is definitely weak. As far as special features its pretty much bare bones. I overall really didnt care for the movie but I saw it with a few people who really dug it. I wouldnt recommend it to the average person but to anyone thats an action nut or likes other straight to dvd action movies then go ahead and rent it. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a vigilante choke slam 6.2 out of 10.
