Ils a.k.a. Them Movie Review
Ive heard about this film for a long time and it has recieved a lot of mixed reviews. Its on region 2 dvd and is going to be released in the U.S. in limited theaters starting August 17th. Im sure it will be on dvd here probably around Christmas time im assuming. This is a French made horror movie c0-directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud. Their next directing project is going to be the remake of The Eye. It also stars the beautiful French actress Olivia Bonamy as Clementine.
The movie does actually have a lot of similarities as Wolf Creek. Both are based on true stories, short running time, and very simple plots without all the extravagent Hollywood embellishments that are in most movies that are supposedly based on true stories. The movie starts off with a mother and daughter that are arguing and crash their car on a countryside road. The two are murdered by some unseen figures in cloaks. One of the creepy things the movie has throughout is a weird clicking sound that accompanies anytime the hooded figures are around. The rest of the movie follows a new teacher named Clementine that gets off of work and decides to go visit her boyfriend in the countryside, for the evening. That night the hooded figures steal her car, break in the house and start to chase them. Most of the movie is slasher style hide and seek with the killers. A couple things start to happen and it makes you question how legitimate the movie really is. By the time everything is revealed at the end it makes sense. Ill go into further details with spoilers below. If you want to see the spoilers highlight the area from the top to bottom so you can see what I type.
Clementine and her boyfriend easily kill two of them with very little resistance. At the end it is revealed that it is a bunch of kids that hang out in the sewers below the city and for fun they go and attack people. So it makes perfect sense in how Clementine was able to pretty easily push one over a balcony to his death and how the b/f clubbed one to death with very little fight. The clicking noise was basically a toy that you spin around real slow to make it click eerily.
End of spoilers. Overall I did like the movie but it didnt blow me away. I think it would have worked better as a short movie like a Masters of Horror episode. Its definitely worth picking up as a rental when it eventually comes out. There are a couple of cool sequences and the surround sound helped add to the tone of the movie. The last 5 minutes of the movie ended pretty strong and I liked the direction they took. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a creepy hooded figure 6.8 out of 10.
Heres the trailer
Heres Olivia in all her beauty
