Isolation Dvd Review
Every time when I get to the point where im gonna swear off straight to dvd (std) horror movies there always seems to be one that comes out of nowhere and surprises me. Isolation is one of those unique sci-fi horror crossovers like Altered earlier this year that actually works. The movie is directed by Irish director Billy O'Brien and was filmed in 2005 but didnt get a release here in the U.S. until recently on dvd. The movie is a bleak dark mutant thriller that reminded a lot of Alien with a pinch of the Thing thrown in. Dont misunderstand me, the movie is not on par with those masterpieces but it does invoke a great repressing, claustrophobic feel that is greatly overlooked in most modern horror movies. The acting is great and the camera work, even handheld shots were very professional. The movie is more sci fi than horror but there are some great gore shots and a few sick cow moments such as pulling a calf out of its mama and a dissection of a few cows that look very realistic.
The story is basically about a farm somewhere in Ireland? thats doing experiments on pregnant cows. When the first cow gets ready to have its baby all hell breaks loose. The offspring of the cow harbors some genetically mutated creatures that feed on the intestines of anything thats alive. The farmer, his vet partner, a scientist and two kids on the run are all on the farm when things start to go wrong.
The music in the movie is top notch and helped invoke a horror type atmosphere throughout. All the effects were practical and non cgi which helped lead to the believability of the movie. One of its greatest strengths and weaknesses was the decision to not go over the top in the kills, which made it feel like it could really happen but on the other hand I was left with wanting a few more people killed and more battling with the monster in the finale.
All in all I was thoroughly surprised and pleased with the movie even though it ended with a cheap and predictable ending prologue. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a slaughterhouse gun skull puncturing 7.1 out of 10.
