The Breed Dvd Review
Produced by Wes Craven and director by Nick Mastandrea the producer of the Scream series. So its a bad ass movie right? Uhh not really. Its basically a slightly bigger budget Std horror movie that doesn't live up to the potential. I should have known better when I saw that it starred ugly ass Taryn Manning and Michelle Rodriguez. If you're not going for great actresses then they could have at least picked some that were good eye candy. I guess some people like Michelle Rodriguez but she does nothing for me in either the acting or looks department. I do give her credit on not trying to do the snarling bad ass shtick that she does in 90% of her movies.
The story is basically about two brothers, their girlfriends, and another male friend that fly to a deserted island where the two brothers grew up and spent vacations at. They thought there was a seeing eye dog school on the island but apparently it really was a secret military project that went awry. The mutated dogs got smarter, killed everyone and now roam the island killing any visitors that get in their way. Sounds like a fun kick ass concept but its never played out to its potential. The movie totally takes place in the daytime and there's very little tension built up in any of the scenes.
Some of the scenes where the dogs are killed off are pretty cool effect wise. One dog gets crushed against the tree while hanging out a car window, another gets an arrow, and a few of them even get ran over. I know its meant to be serious but it usually seems its unintentionally funny when an animal gets whacked in a movie. To see a dog fly through the air after being hit by an arrow is funny in a sick way.
Overall there's not much substance to it and its just an action lite that never lives up to its potential. There's also some silly side plot about Michelle Rodriguez's character used to date one brother then they broke up and she started to date the other and now there some weird tension between the characters. The dvd does have a cool 30 minute making of that shows how they trained the dogs for various scenes of the movie. The movie as a whole was disappointing and boring so i give it a much deserved 5.0 plus another .5 for the dog deaths bringing it to a whopping 5.5 out of 10.
