sherrybaby Dvd Review
I knew Maggie Gyllenhall was nominated for a Golden Globe and I read some of the rave reviews of this, so my expectations going into this were fairly high. I do think she is overall the more talented Gyllenhall and I liked her recent role in Stranger than Fiction. The good news for a lot of people is you get to see her tits in the movie. A lot. The bad news is I didnt find them very enticing. I know thats not the main part of the movie but i had to get that out of the way.
The movie was just ok for me. A lot of it worked and it was was well directed just something about it falls flat. Maggie is a great actress but somehow I didnt buy her in the role. Its very hard for me to believe someone such as Maggie or Julia in Erin Brocovich being white trash. Ive been around white trash and believe me they dont look like Maggie or Julia. Something about her look didnt make me feel her character totally. Theres more to white trashness besides cussing a lot and smoking. I cant explain it, its just something you're born with. Look at Jamie Presley in "My Name is Earl" now thats perfect casting. Maggie did the best she could with the role but some of the other acting such as her brother in the movie, was suspect.
The movie is about about a woman who is recently released from prison after 2 1/2 years and her struggle to restart her relationship with her young daughter while trying to get a job and stay off of drugs. Spoiler Alert: you find out that she was abused as a young girl and that plus other factors has led her down the path of destruction. End Spoiler.
The daughter now lives with Maggie's brother and his wife. Maggie tries to get her way and deal with life through sexual means and eventually drugs. Nothing too original but not much cliche either. Danny Trejo has a great supporting role and it is refreshing to see him do stuff other than being a thug.
I recommend it if you like the " woman falls and then struggles to make it back" type of movie. To me personally it was a little disappointing and boring.
