Tzameti (13) Dvd Review
This is another movie i had extremely high hopes for after all the buzz and reviews ive heard recently. Fortunately the movie ending up being very good but still short of being great like i was hoping. It was shot in black and white which worked overall quite effectively. It seems like most modern day movies thats been shot in black and white seem to be better overall than the average movie......Schindlers List, Clerks, and Sin City come to mind. There are a few exceptions to this rule *cough* The Man Who Wasnt There *cough* but overall it seems to be true. The direction was solid and so was the acting overall. The musical score was almost nonexistent but i think that was on purpose to go for a minimal type of approach.
The movie is about this young guy thats working on a couple's roof and he overhears a couple of conversations. The dude who lives in the house keeps talking about a big opportunity he's going to go on that could possibly make him a lot of money. Over the next week or so the guy still works on the roof, and the man who lives in the house dies from a drug overdose. The young guy finds an envelope that blew out the window and landed on the ground. It contained a train ticket and a receipt for a paid hotel room. Curious, the guy decides to go and find out whats going on in hopes of being able to participate in whats going on. The big twist to the story which comes about 30 minutes in, is the boy unknowingly becomes a contestant in a large Russian roulette game. These rich European white dudes each have their own representative that they bet on to live or die each round. All 13 contestents stand in a big circle with their gun pointed at the back of the head of the guy in front of them. They start off with one bullet in the revolver then add another bullet each round they survive. So in order to live you either have to have the guy behind you fire a empty round or have him die before he's able to pull the trigger on you. Theres a light bulb in the middle of the room and the triggers gets pulled when the light turns on.
Sounds like a bad ass concept right!!!? It is, but sadly the suspense was not built up enough before the triggers were pulled. I think it might have been the lack of a dramatic score or it was the approach to the movie. It was not gory at all and no blood or brain matter was seen. If they intended to go the minimal route they should have shown more gore to have the full effect. I would have preferred a good score than the gore but to each his own. So the rest of the movie is basically about this guy and his shock and disbelief he goes through being part of the hideous game. The last act was kind of predictable and another side plot involving the police kinda didnt pan out like it could have but overall it was a unique and different movie that i definitely recommend once it comes out in a few months on dvd. Im tired of foreigh remakes for the most part but i think this might be the one remake , if put in the right hands could be mind blowing.
