Buffalo 66
Dvd Review
I love this movie. As much as i hate his newest movie "Brown Bunny" , i still love this movie a lot. When i first heard about it i saw that killer trailer with music only and i was entranced. I was hoping the movie would live up to it and it definitely did. I had never heard of Vincent Gallo before but i had liked most of Christina Ricci's work. She looks hot in this movie. A lot better than ive seen her in other movie to date. The only thing about the movie i knew was that it was written, directed and starred Vincent. Supposedly hes a model or something but to me he looks like a perverted weirdo. Dont get me wrong he does a great job acting but still looks like a scrub.
The movie's about Vincents character Billy, is let out of prison after 5 years and wants to go home to see his parents who didnt know he was locked up. His parents didnt know he went to jail so he wants to impress them by saying he was off on a job and now he has a wife. So he kidnaps Christina Ricci's character Layla and he tells her she has to pose as his wife. After a short while she starts to like him or pity him and agrees to go along. The movie is shot in Buffalo and also focuses on his family's obsession with the Buffalo Bills. His parents portrayed by Angelica Huston and Ben Gazzara are also perfectly cast for the role. As the movie progresses you learn more about Billy and his past and how he decides to cope with it.
The performances by both actors are great. Ricci plays an innocent and emotionally needy woman who is trying to both deal with the situation shes been thrown in and still deal with her feelings shes having about this strange man she just met. Billy Brown is a complex character that has many issues he is dealing with and Gallo plays it to perfection. The dialogue has a fresh improvised but real feel to it. There are several scenes where there are pauses and long stretches with no talking which adds to the feel of the movie. The cinemotography is great and has a lot of different and intersting angles. Awesome directorial debut by this do it all actor. I hope he can get back and capture the essence of this movie and stay away from any more garbage like the Brown Bunny.
