The Girlfriend Experience
Directed by Steven Soderbergh

Starring Sasha Grey and Chris Santos
Available in theaters in limited release
Fascinating. Im not the biggest fan of Soderbergh but I do admit that he at least makes interesting choices. At least I know when you arent watching one of his "hollywood" type movies, then you will at least get something thats most likely thought provoking. When I saw The Girlfriend Experience I knew nothing about the movie going into it. All I knew was that hookers or escorts that kiss you on mouth and talk to you were giving you the "girlfriend experience", instead of just straight up sex.

The movie is centered around two central characters. A high priced escort and her b/f thats also a personal trainer. Their's not really a main theme or story arc but its more like a slice in the life of these two characters over a few month period.
As far as on a technical level the film is top notch. I really enjoyed the style the movie was shot in. There are no dolly shots or even hand held instead he goes for a more straight forward approach with a bunch of static shots with the characters fixed in one position even when the people talking are taking turns. The story goes back and forth in time but was still very easy to follow. Also the music fit the tone of the movie perfectly. Dont get me wrong the movie is not flawless. I hated so many of the characters in the movie. They talked about politics a lot and they were either rich pricks or they were pitiful family men that were cheating on their wives. A majority of the movie focuses on the escort Chelsea, (cutie Sasha Grey) but I actually enjoyed the scenes with her b/f Chris (Chris Santos) even more. I really liked how most of the dialogue sounded natural instead of rehearsed. Overall I was really interested in seeing this young escort dealing with her job and how her b/f knew about it and supported her decisions.
The bottom line I know this movie is not for everybody and I cant argue with anyone who says this is the most boring, pretentious movie they've ever seen, but I also cant argue for anyone who says the movie is brilliant and their favorite movie of the year. For me, I just found it fascinating.
