Available on dvd 04/28/2009Ill cut to the chase. This is not a very good movie. Horrible, horrible acting, a cheesy predictable plot and some uninspired action sequences. Still all in all, intentional or not it did remind me of a mindless cheesy 80's style action flick.
The movie is about this dude Diego Carter (Hector Echavarria) a current MMA champ that gets lured into a secret underground fight club. When you win you get hundreds of thousands of dollars and you get to fuck the loser's girlfriend. The more Diego wins, the more he gets caught up in the underbelly of this illegal fighting league. Eventually he learns some secrets about how the league is ran and has to confront and fight the Russian leader (Kilpatrick).
I wont say I didnt have fun with it but half the movie I was shaking my head at the ridiculousness of it all. The main actor Hector Echavarria is not very charismatic and is kinda bland. As you can see from the cast there are several real mma fighters in the movie but most of them have a minor role. From an acting standpoint Keith Herring did the best job and by far BJ Penn was the worst. Unless its broadcasting a fight that dude never needs to be in front of a camera again. Rampage Jackson was so over the top he was awesome. He hammed it up good and I cant wait to see him again in a different role.
I cant wholeheartedly really recommend this to anyone. Im sure MMA fans will check it out just to see their favorite fighters but Im sure most will be disappointed way before the credits roll. If the movie did showcase the MMA stars more it could have been so much better. This is just the first in a series of 4 different action movies that are in production starring Hector and other MMA stars. Lets just hope the others are better than this crap. And some people think that WWE films are bad. Those movies are miles better in directing, acting, production, and fight choreography than this movie. They should have just embraced the campiness and ran with it.On a scale of 1-10 I give this an overused flying leg kick 4.8 out of 10.
