Vinyan Movie Review
Directed by Fabrice Du Welz
Starring Rufus Sewell and Emmanuelle Béart
Available on dvd 04/07/2009
Holy fucking shit. This movie kicks ass. Easily the single best movie Ive seen this year. This is a very difficult movie to review without giving away too many details or actually describing the feeling it pulls you through.
The movie plot is simple enough. Paul (Rufus Sewell) and Jeanne (Emmanuelle Beart) lost their young son , Joshua, in a Tsunami about 6 months earlier. While watching a video about orphaned children, Jeanne believes she sees her young son. She convinces her husband to go to Thailand/ Burma to try and find him. The rest of the movie deals with the couple on this wild journey while being deceived by lowlife characters and dealing with the madness of their loss.
The first thing that comes to attention is the magnificent cinematography. The crane shots, the under water shots, the close ups, just everything about the movie is beautiful. I cant remember the last time a movie fucked with me so much emotionally. When the couple is desperate, confused, angry, drunk, or hallucinating the movie just draws you in and lets you feel what they are going through. Thats both a testament to the great acting job and direction of the movie. They are in one of the most dangerous/primitive places on Earth and you feel every second of it. Of course most movies are only as good as the ending and fortunately the ending worked for me. I can see how Hollywood purists or those who arent into strong dramas would hate it. Unless you have an open mind or into these type of movies then im sure this movie will be overindulgent boring piece of shit. So if Paul Blart or Transformers are your favorite type of movies then I highly doubt you would like this. For any other fan of drama or "high art" type of movies then I cant recommend this enough. This is the first movie of the year to break the almost inpenetrable 9 barrier on the rating scale. On a scale of 1-10 I give this a lipstick faced kid, 9.1 out of 10.
