Echelon Conspiracy Movie Review
Directed by Greg Marcks
Starring: Shane West, Edward Burns, Ving Rhames and Martin Sheen
Availability on dvd unknown so far.
I was pretty pumped to see this movie after I saw the acting talent involved and also noticing that it was directed by Greg Marcks director of one of my favorite stdvd movies 11:14. It did not disappoint. If you are a fan of Eagle Eye then this should definitely be up your alley. Its more of a low budget realistic version of that movie. Or if you thought Eagle Eye was an over bloated Hollywood mess then this more straight forward approach to the material may be more up your alley.
The movie is about this computer programmer Max Peterson (Shane West) that receives a package from an unknown sender. Inside the box is a futuristic cell phone that sends him text messages. The first text message tells him to not get on his plane and stay at the hotel in Prague for another night. Later that day the airplane he was scheduled to be on crashes and kills all the passengers. The text messages later instruct him to go to a specific casino and it tells him what slot machine to play and what table to play, and he eventually wins 3 million dollars. The head of casino security John Reed (Ed Burns) knows something is suspicious and captures him. Pretty soon the American Nsa show up led by Agent Dave Grant (Ving Rhames) to handle the situation. One of the top Nsa people (Martin Sheen) and Dave Grant know that a government security program called Echelon has been contacting people to do certain things and then they end up dead. While Agent Grant takes over the case and try to fool Echelon, Max and John Reed go to Russia to find a hacker to discover the real truth behind the text messages.
I wont spoil any more details but there are a lot of things I liked about the movie. There is a bad ass fight between this hot chick and this agent thats easily the best chick on dude fight Ive seen in a long time. There is also this gnarly kill where this dude gets smashed between two cars. Also an all around solid acting job by all involved.
The only problem I had with the film was the ending. The whole ending sequence was a little underwhelming compared to the rest of the film. Overall I still enjoyed it and recommend it to all Eagle Eye or thriller fans out there. It had a decent budget and some known actors so Im kinda surprised its getting the straight to dvd treatment. Maybe they are scared of the Eagle Eye similarities? On a scale of 1-10 I give this a punched in the face for helping a damsel in distress, 7.0 out of 10.
