Midnight Movie Review
Directed by Jack Messitt
Available now on dvd.
I actually had this movie for quite some time now but I never got around to it because of the generic name and cover art. So my expectations were pretty low going in. I gotta admit I had a pretty good time watching this debut movie by first time director Jack Messitt.
Theres just something about horror movies that are set in movie theaters that just seem to work. Off the top of my head I can think of movies such as Demons 1, Popcorn, and of course....ahem....The Grand Horror.
The movie opens with a horror movie director thats committed to an insane asylum for murders he committed decades before. Supposedly his movie featured real killings of the actors. The doctor in charge thinks it would be good therapy for his patient to watch his own horror movie that he directed back in the 70's. Soon after the director goes mad again ,and goes on a murder spree and escapes. Thats the intro to the movie and the rest of it takes place in a small town at a local theater. They have midnight screenings of horror movies and they happen to have a print of that infamous movie to show. The patrons that come to see it are this big burly biker and his trashy g/f, the theater manager's little brother, her b/f and their friends. Also in attendance is the cop who is assigned to the case of capturing the escaped fugitive. Also one of the concession stand workers is that little cute blonde chick that can haul ass on Heroes. Too bad Matt wasnt there to save her in this movie though. Anyways while they are watching the movie, the geek goes to take a piss. He gets murdered in the bathroom and the rest of the people are watching it live on the screen. Pretty soon they figure out he has a supernatural power of jumping back and forth between the movie and real life.
One things that adds to a good slasher is an iconic character. The killer in this movie looks bad ass. He has a half skull mardi gras looking mask with the jaw ripped off and a black cloth mouth. (Its much cooler than how im describing it I promise) Also he has a unique killing tool thats like a hand corkscrew looking thing? Also he finally talks at the end and his voice is a low baritone with echo that kicks all kind of ass.
It is a "b" movie through and through. The acting is pretty bad, there is some horrible dialogue but it all still flows very well. There are some cool murders and gore even though some of it does get a little repetitious. I really liked the supernatural element to it and even if its not a fully original story its at the very least a fairly interesting take on it.
If you are a fellow slasher fan then its probably a must see. So on a scale of 1-10 I give this a b.j. in a movie theater, 7.3 out of 10.

Trailer (minor spoilers)
