Friday the 13th (2009) Movie Review

Theres no friggin way I can give an unbiased review of this movie. So take this review with a huge grain of salt. Last night I saw this movie at a sneak screening courtesy of my buddy Jeremy at http://feedbackloop.wordpress.com/ (his review there also). In attendance for 3 Q&A sessions were two of the producers and Mr Jason Voorhees (Derek Mears). They were all cool as hell and Derek Mears in particular was very funny and charming.
Getting to the review the movie was pretty much what I was hoping and expecting it to be. Partying, titties, some cool kills, more titties and a satisfying ending that still leads to a sequel. Marcus Nispel from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake did a great job once again in the visual look and feel of the movie. The movie does straddle the line with campy fun and realism which I really liked. I wouldnt say the kills were all amazing but a lot of them were paying homage to earlier Friday films which was cool. I did like the decision of going with loud sound cues and jump scares which Im a huge fan of. The acting was adequate and the chicks were smoking hot.
There are a few things I did have beef with. The musical score was nowhere near the masterpiece of Manfredi's. They were also very light on the chhh chhh chh ha ha ha's which I think is essential in any Jason film. I also didnt like how he just stumbled onto finding the hockey mask. Im not sure either if I was a huge fan of Jason having an underground lair. It only makes sense that's how he would to avoid being seen but it was hard for me to digest. Even with those issues I still had a fucking blast watching the movie. Surprisingly the movie did have a few good comedic moments that really worked.
About half way through the movie the projector power went out during a kill sequence and when the movie started back up it was already passed that point. Luckily Derek Mears got to reenact the scene for the audience after the movie. During the Q&A I asked what was going to be on the uncut version of the dvd. In response he asked people to not put the following on the net but here goes anyways. Huge spoilers for the dvd. Highlight only after you have seen the movie. They stated there will be two cuts on the dvd. The cut down theatrical version and also an unrated version which will have longer sex scenes, gorier kills, and a new storyline that was cut out. The storyline that was cut is as follows: the girl that Jason has hostage (Whitney) escapes and right when shes about to return to safety at the cabin that her brother is at, Jason captures her again and brings her back to his lair.
All in all I had a friggin blast and hopefully people will go in droves so there can be a definite sequel that will hopefully be in 3D as hinted at by the producers. On a scale of 1-10 I give this a whoop ass machine 8.0 out of 10. And no Jason doesnt grow pot!
