Jack Ketchum's Red Movie Review
Directed by Lucky McKee
Starring Bryan Cox, Tom Sizemore, and Robert Englund
So far Jack Ketchum adaptions are 3 for 3. I really loved The Lost and The Girl Next Door and as the more time passes the more I like Red. I think his stories are so straight forward and just directed and acted so well, they just work on screen. When I saw this movie I had no idea this was directed by Lucky of May and The Woods fame.
The story is about this old man (Bryan Cox) that goes fishing one day with his old dog Red. A trio of punk kids try to rob him, then they shoot his dog. The rest of the movie is about the old man tracking down the kids and trying to bring them to justice. He just wants the kids to apologize and get some kind of punishment but they are protected by the small town police and two of the kids rich daddy (Tom Sizemore aka mini Michael Madsen). The only help the old man has is an old lawyer friend and a reporter that wants to do the right thing. Next thing you know everything spirals out of control until the final bloody conclusion.
Bryan Cox is fucking awesome in this movie. He plays a lonely, righteous old man beautifully. His dog Red was the last gift he was given by his deceased wife, and you can see the pain in his eyes and voice over the loss of his best friend. His performance is subtle but still magical every time he's on the screen. There's also a great cameo by Robert Englund as a white trash dad and also a good performance by Tom Sizemore as the rich asshole daddy thats not played too over the top as some people might have portrayed him. Oh yeah the young dickheads kids did their part and played it convincingly.
The movie kinda reminded me of something like The Straight Story but being a Jack Ketchum adaption there is some blood and violence toward the end. Thankfully the violence is more realistic based instead of Hollywood bullshit.
I know this movie will impact some more than others (especially dog lovers as myself), but regardless there is a lot to like in this movie. Its a shame that it probably wont get a theatrical release and it will just be lost in dvd obscurity like his other adaption The Lost. This comes highly recommended and on a scale of 1-10 I give this a baseball bat rage, 8.0 out of 10.

Trailer (Very Heavy Spoilers)

I really enjoyed this. Probably give it a 7, because it was a little slow, and was hoping for something a little more twisted at the end. Alot of good acting though.
