Ed Burns is the next Woody Allen. I fucking love his movies and look forward to each release. He has a lot similarities to Woody, such as small ensemble character driven movies and a majority of them also take place in New York. If you've never seen any of his movies I suggest starting off with either Brothers McMullen, his debut, or the more recent The Groomsmen. While I love both of those I think his newest movie Purple Violets is the most polished so far.

The movie is about 2 sets of friends that used to date each other and they finally meet again after 8 yrs. Patti (Selma Blair) is an author that used to date Brian (Patrick Wilson), also an author and they had a mutual split up. Kate (Debra Messing) used to date Michael (Ed Burns) but they split up cuz she thought he was cheating on her. Brian and Michael are friends and they want both of the chicks back but there of course is a problem. Patti is married to Chazz, Donal Logue, who plays this British wanker in my favorite movie role of his ever! Also Kate still hates Michael's fucking guts. Michael is now a rich lawyer and he hires Patti to be his real estate agent and gets Patti to help him hook back up with Kate. Then Brian tries his best to win Patti Back. Thats pretty much the meat of the story. Of course there are some awkward funny situations and great dialogue or the movie would be boring as hell.

The acting is awesome the dialogue is witty and funny and the location shooting has some great cinemotography. Not the most original story but it doesnt matter cuz everything else is top notch. If you are a Woody Allen fan, like Ed Burns other movies, or even something like Linklater's Before Sunrise/Sunset movies, then I highly recommend checking it out. On a scale of 1-10 I give this a "jacking to a sex number" 8.5 out of 10.
