Wow what a fucking awesome movie. One of the most entertaining documentaries Ive ever seen. From the first minute when it showed clips of Sly in Rocky and Rambo, and Arnold in Commando and Predator I was totally pumped. (pun intended) This is a hard hitting, entertaining, educating movie that is as good as the trailer and reviews indicate. The movie has great pacing and excellent editing. Im sure they could have put tons more footage in it but it probably would have made it a little too long. At the current cut its the perfect length. I guess thats what deleted scenes are for>
The movie follows the story of narrator Chris Bell and his two steroid taking brothers, Mad Dog and Smelly. It tells their story of wanting to be huge like their childhood idols Arnold and Hulk Hogan. The movie chronicles the history of steroids by archive footage of news reports, congressional hearings, doctor interviews, and there are celebrity interviews and also footage and interviews of the brothers. While the vast majority of the movie focuses on steroids, it also brushes on the subject of other performance enhancement drugs and nutritional supplements. In fact my favorite piece of the whole movie is when Chris hires a bunch of illegal immigrants to help make his own nutritional supplement so he can show how easy it is and how unregulated the whole industry is. Another segment of the movie shows how easy it is for professional photgraphers to make a before and after picture as shown in below. That whole picture was done in just one day on a computer.
The strongest part of the movie is Chris Bell himself. He is a great interviewer, intelligent, and he gets his interviewees to open up and be honest with him. I was surprised at how candid a lot of the interviews were. It also attacks certain myths of steroids and how it actually affects the human body under different circumstances. It also reveals the hypocrisy of people like Arnold and other government officials on the matter. I guarantee you after watching this if you have an open mind you will be more informed and possibly change your mind on a few preconceived notions that you might have had. You might not change your stance on steroids used in sporting events but you might change your mind on how you view people that take them in general.
This movie is highly recommended for anyone even if you dont usually like documentaries in general. It has great crossover appeal similar to Supersize Me. On a scale of 1-10 I give this a freakish 28" biceps 9.0 out of 10.
