Hells to the yeah. I highly enjoyed this dark and gritty serial killer horror film much in the vein of Seven and other modern torture horror movies such as Saw and Hostel. Unfortunately with that last sentence a lot of you are skipping down and starting to read another post without hearing me out. Dont get me wrong after I see shitfests like Captivity then I can understand why people dont want to give "torture porn" (which i hate that misleading term almost as much as homophobia) another chance.
Stellan Skarsgard was excellent as always, Melissa George adequate and Selma Blair continues to grow as an actor in her brief role. The movie was shot all grainy and mostly at night which added to the seedy tone of the crack and gang infected streets of the movie. This was not a place where you want to live or even visit in the daytime even with cops in tow. Great atmosphere, editing and set designs all around.
The movie is about this detective Argo(Stellan) and his new female partner Wescott(Melissa George) that come across a dead body with the initials of W, triangle or delta, and then a Z across the body. As the movie unfolds you start to slowly unravel the mystery of the killer and their motives. One by one gang members who were involved in a heinous crime and one of their loved ones start to die while the detectives try to find the killer before they finish their full equation. Also one of the gang members is an informant for detective Argo but is there more than meets the eye?
The movie through the killer proposes the question: How far would you go to protect someone that you love? Are we just animals looking to protect ourselves or is there such a thing as true love?
If you pay attention close enough you should be able to semi predict the ending about 30 minutes beforehand but that still shouldnt hinder the impact of it. While the movie was not totally original it still was well acted, directed and had a solid script. I wish there would have been a few more tense moments but the movie more or less acted as a police procedural drama than a horror movie in that regard.
All in all I had a bloody good time and I think most horror fans would to. If you are tired of these kinds of movies then i would subtract about 2 points off of my final score. Its definitely worth a watch and I cant wait to see more from this upcoming director. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a broken bottle 7.8 out of 10.
Hotties Selma and Melissa
