Funny Games Movie Review
Directed by Michael Haneke
Starring: Naomi Watts, Tim Roth
What a pretty unique horror thriller. Im surprised I havent heard more about it, especially with name actors such as Naomi Watts and the always excellent Tim Roth. The more I think about this movie the more I enjoyed it. The movie is a remake of the 97 German movie also titled Funny Games and also directed by Michael Haneke. Ive never seen the original but this is suppose to be a shot for shot remake but with English speaking actors. I know this movie is going to be controversial especially for the way the third act went and the direction the director went with it. I dont want to spoil anything but there is a very unconventional thing that happens two times thats usually associated with other movie genres such as comedies or something animated. I actually liked what happened and the way the movie ended, but I know its gonna piss a lot of people off. 10 years ago im sure the movie was some type of social statement about the state of the world and how we like to embrace violence but I just looked at it as just pure entertainment. (Which may actually support what he was trying to say.)
The movie is basically about a family that goes on vacation to their cottage on the lake. When they arrive they meet some eccentric young men who claim to be their neighbors and are looking to borrow some eggs. Very soon things get awkward and the young men played brilliantly by Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet take the family hostage. They soon find out that they have done this with other families in the area. The young men begin to play various mind games and other things with the family. Tim Roth does an especially good job at playing a pussy father who is wounded early on by a blow to the leg by a golf club. The dialogue is first class and flows perfectly weird throughout the movie. As the movie progresses things start to get dire for the family and both the son and the mother try an escape. Telling much more would do the movie injustice for anyone planning on watching this. There is not much gore or violence done onscreen but the aftermath of what is done is still very effective. The scene where the mother looks for the dog is really disturbing to me. I really liked this movie and I dont doubt once word of mouth hits it should be a popular rental.
All in all from the opening music and credits the movie was fresh and I really enjoyed it because it was out of the norm. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a super powered remote control 8.1 out of 10.
Naomi Watts looking fine!
