April Fools Day (2008) Movie Review
Man im getting sick of remakes, especially shitty ones. I dont mind if they are good or improve on the original such as The Hills Have Eyes or The Ring. But most of them fall into the why the fuck did they do that "Black Xmas" category. This one pretty much falls into the latter. The original April Fools Day was a very underrated 80's horror classic. I can remember the first time I saw it and the huge shit eating grin I had on my face. You have to remember that was way before every friggin movie started sucking on M. Night's nut and had to also have some kind of twist to it. That twist is what made the movie work. Now when I saw the remake I knew that and the whole time I was watching, it kind of took me out of the movie looking at obvious clues to the ending. Besides that, this remake was designed more as a thriller instead of horror movie.
The story is basically about a group of friends that pull a April Fools prank on a girl that ends up in her death. Its one year later and the "dead girl" calls them all together at her graveside and in a letter states that if the one person who was really behind the whole thing doesnt confess then they will all die. The rest of the movie is basically going from location to location looking for clues to the murderer while the friends get picked off one by one.
The original all took place on one day and didnt have any of this one year later bullshit that a million other movies have. Also the original was an actually horror movie that had a killer stalking the kids on an island. While I didnt hate this remake I just know it could have been so much better. For those who havent seen the original im sure you would rate it a little higher than I would. I do give props to the director for a competent job and the actors were mostly pretty good but unfortunately it still lacked something to make it a recommendable movie. If you see this late night on cable I'd say go ahead and watch otherwise go and get the original instead. On a scale of 1-10 I give this a roofie laced 5.2 out of 10.
Starring the hottie Taylor Cole
