Applessed Ex Machina Blu Ray Review
Holy shit, mother fucker, son of a bitch! That was my first thoughts after watching the first 15 minutes of this movie. I was ready to move it to #1 on my favorite animated movies list and guarantee it in my top ten of the year. But then the excitement died down some and the action never quite lived up to the exciting beginning.
This is the sequel to the much underrated original Appleseed movie released a few years back. That also had cutting edge graphics at the time but nothing compared to this. In my opinion from an artistic point of view this is the best merge of cgi/animation ever put to film. Yes even better than Pixar and yes even better than the excellent graphics of the Final Fantasy Advent Children movie. The movie plot is fairly simple which is a plus overall but it might be too simple or cliche. At least it doesnt have the god complex/philosophical bullshit that 90% of sci fi anime has. Its basically a story about 3 cops, a human, a cyborg and a bioroid that are part of a special police force that is out to protect the worlds government from a takeover of this evil entity. There is a product thats like some kind of blue tooth headset looking thing that is a futuristic tv for watching events and email, text, etc... and the whole world pretty much owns one. Then the evil force emits some kind of evil signal that spreads a technological control over any human wearing it, turning them into mindless zombies. It even starts to affect the human/robot cop that can only be controlled by a special serum that poured into the back of the neck. Finally there is a big showdown ala Matrix 3 at the end of the movie and they save the day. The movie is fairly predictable but luckily short on the melodrama it flashed from time to time. The interactions between the 3 characters were kinda lame but nothing too extreme. This movie is about visuals and it delivers in spades.
The only other problem I had was the Pg 13 rating. If this was cranked up to an R, I think it would have been much more effective during the action sequences. The hd video and audio is absolutely mind blowing. So far my favorite hd visual movie Ive seen so far. While the movie is far from perfect it still should be recommended to all animated and action fans alike. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a bioroid, cyborg, human love triangle 8.8 out of 10.Heres the trailer
