Spirited Killer Dvd Review
I just love seeing the true thai name of this movie written out: Plook mun kuen ma kah 4. Ill cut to the chase, this Thai kung fu movie was released in the U.S. for one purpose only. Its to capitalize on the recent success of martial arts sensation Tony Jaa of Ong Bak and the Protector(Tom Yum Goong) fame. He is prominently pictured on the cover and the dvd even though he is actually only in it for about 10 minutes total. The first 5 minutes of his screen time he is just one of many people that are attempting to kill the mad voodoo doctor. After everyone gets beat down he attempts to run away from the doctor and at that time he has another 5 minute solo fight against the killer. During this second portion of the fight you can see the skills that Tony has which would be later perfected and used in his other recent movies.
The movie has very little setup or plot. Its basically about this voodoo doctor with super human strength and speed for some unknown reason wants to kill anyone and everyone he comes into contact with. At the beginning of the movie a group of men seeking revenge for the death of several villagers, surround the doctor and slice him up and kick him in the river, left for dead. 5 years later he's back and he brings another unstoppable zombie killer with him. So the villagers and a group of Japanese tourists battle the doctor and zombie in hopes to finally stop them. In the finale a good witch doctor gives them a sacred sword that can kill the baddies. Thats it, nothing more, nothing less to the paper thin plot.
There are two main aspects I look for in a martial arts film. The first is quality of the fighting and the second is quantity of the fighting. The quality in this movie is pretty much average with some cool moments of flip kicks and swordplay. The quantity of fighting is way above average. There is probably only about 15-20 minutes of dialogue throughout the movie.
It was pretty cool to see a young Tony Jaa with a ridiculous looking black jacket with white tiger stripes in his first movie role. I doubt this movie would appeal to anyone outside of martial arts enthusiasts. On a scale of 1-10 I give this a voodoo sword in the back 5.8 out of 10.
