An STD worth having (or at least watching)
Dead Mary Dvd Review
If i could sum this movie up in a sentence it would be.."A more realistic Evil Dead". Dont misunderstand what im saying this movie is not near the masterpiece Evil Dead is and its not all crazy, gory and kinetic like that movie was. As far as the basic premise of the movie thats basically what it is with a pinch of Candyman thrown in. This is STD (straight to dvd) director Robert Wilson's 2nd effort into the genre and boy has he grown. His first movie Warriors of Terra was a mess, all over the place and not knowing exactly what kind of movie it wanted to be. Dead Mary is way superior in every respect especially in the acting department. This movie stars hottie Dominque Swain and a bunch of no namers who all do a good to great job. This probably reveals im a perv (surprise) but ive had a hard on for Dominique since I first saw her as the teenage daughter in Face Off back in 97.
I have a feeling this movie is going to be one of those you either really like it or really hate it type of movies. Its not your typical Std horror movie in any way. Besides being well acted the cinematography is top notch and its very heavy on dialogue. Theres very little gore, jump scares and no tension building dramatic horror soundtrack or chases through the woods. The story is basically about a group of seven 20 something age friends who meet together at a cabin in the woods for a weekend of fun and reminiscing. All of them grew up together with the exception of one of them being the new g/f. Kim (Dominique) arrives with her recently ex b/f that she had already agreed to go there with. The first 40 minutes or so is all dialogue of the friends getting together drinking, talking and just basic hanging out. This would probably turn a lot of people off at this point but i thought it added a much needed back story and get you to know the characters a lot better. By the time they play the game to conjure up Dead Mary you can already sense the tension between everyone and their old, new and secret relationships with each other. The game is basically Bloody Mary but renamed Dead Mary for some odd reason. The rules as told by the movie are that you go into a completely dark bathroom with only a candle for light. Then you close your eyes and say Dead Mary 3 times. Once you say it the third time then you open your eyes and Dead Mary is suppose to appear behind you. Unknowingly by the others one of them is possessed by Mary and later on that night one friend is killed. The possessed dead body then reveals several secrets that were only known by the individuals. From that point on the movie turns into a psychological mess with none of the friends trusting each other or knowing who the real killer is. Is it the new girl? A secret lover? Or is it just Dead Mary reincarnated?
I personally enjoyed it but I could easily see how people would hate it or not like it because it is so different or maybe even the abrupt ending. I thought the ending fit the rest of the movie once I thought about it but upon initial reaction I was pissed too. The strength of the movie is that it doesnt try to be something cliche or over the top. No one has superhuman power, levitate or do anything you would expect out of this type of movie. In fact "Dead Mary" has pretty much the same weaknesses a normal human would possess. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary and fresh then I highly recommend it. Even though its only been a few months this is so far my favorite horror movie of 2007.
