Last Light DVD Review
I found this movie while searching around Blockbuster online. I thought a movie starring and directed by Jack Bauer and also starring Forest Whitaker had to be good or at least worth watching. Yep it was pretty solid. Kiefer Sutherland did a great job directing and acting as a death row inmate Denver Bayliss. This was a movie back in 1993 made for Showtime but just recently released on dvd.
The story focuses on death row white trash inmate Denver (Jack Bauer aka Kiefer) and his last few weeks before he is sentenced to death. During this time he befriends a new prison guard Fred Whitmore (Forest Whitaker) who has marital problems and a son he cant relate to at home.
The movie straddles the borderline of been there, done that cheese and an entertaining prison movie. With the great performances by everyone and a great fitting soundtrack it narrowly avoids most cliches seen in a dozen other prison movies. Regrettably it doesnt stand up to such masterpieces as Dead Men Walking and Shawshank Redemption but it does have a nice little charm to it that had me wanting to know what was next. The best parts of the movie is Forest and his interactions with his family. The prison scenes were good but nothing we havent seen before. Kiefer did a great job playing a career prison inmate who's whole life has been nothing but being in the system. The point of the movie which is made quite well is showing how f'ed up life can be growing up but its up to yourself to decide which way to take it and not fall into the trap so many people do. Thats what I got out of it at least. For all I know it could have been an anti death row movie but I didnt see it that way.
I definitely recommend checking it out if you are into prison movies or a decent character study about a few guys from different ends of the spectrum.
