Panasonic HT740 Home Theater System Review
For the past few months I was looking for a new surround sound system. My last one crashed over a year ago and ive been jonesing for another one ever since. Before i finally chose the panasonic system it had to meet the following requirements:
1. At least be around 1000 watts Check
2. Rear speaker wireless capable Check
3. Upconvert dvd player Check
4. Stylish looking Check
5. Hdmi outgoing port Check
6. Affordable Double Check

What it has that i wasnt expecting:
1. 5 disc changer (Believe me this wasnt anything i thought was a big deal until I had it)
2. Front music port to hook up mp3 player
3. Surround sound simulator option that turns normal mono or stereo audio to all 5 speakers for a simulated surround effect.

What else can i say? Ive had it a few weeks now and i absolutely love it. Perfect size and power for small to medium size living rooms. Rear speakers are wireless capable with the Panasonic FX60 upgrade unit. I dont have it yet but it has received a lot of positive reviews. For movies and tv its perfect amount of volume for those tasks but I would imagine if it was 800 watts 0r less than i would have wanted something louder. For cd's and the front port for mp3 players it gets even louder. There are several different sound field options to choose from to manipulate the sound how you like it. Its not loud enough for a full fledge Animal House style party but its definitely enough for me to jam to. My last test was with the Wii and 360. Now for game systems it gets freaking loud!!! I would say about 25-30% louder than what it does for tv's and movies. When I was playing Gears of War I could have sworn I was in battle with the thump of subwoofer every time i threw grenades and shot the boom shot. Once when I was chainsawing some poor COG my dog got up and ran from the room. The surround sound on other games like Call of Duty 3 and Far Cry Instints Predator made the experience that much sweeter. Another sweet surprise is the upconverting dvd player. Now i already had an upconverting stand alone player but this ones even better quality. The difference between the standard dvd and the upconvert 1080i image is night and day. I would say it is easily 25-30% better. It has all these features plus FM, AM radio and other things I cant even think of right now. The best thing about the whole thing is I got it on sale for only 280 bucks at Best Buy with a 30 dollar gift card. Ive seen it on sale at other places from anywhere from 250 to 330 bucks. Its a great medium level jack of all trades home theater package. Highly recommended.
