Oscar Nominations Announced
Can anyone tell me why the hell do most Oscar nominated movies come out at the end of the year instead of the beginning? Wouldnt it make more sense for the movies to be out with plenty of time for people to have either watched them at the theater or at least on dvd. Imagine what the ratings would be like if people could actually identify with a majority of the movies that are nominated instead of just rooting for the one or two movies or performances that they have actually seen. Even though i believe the oscars are way more legitimate than most other award shows like the emmys or the grammys i still get irked over a few things.
The grammy's by the way are the ultimate joke. Music is so subjective so I would tend to say if they were actually based on skill or originality only about one artist that wins would actually win if it were judged correctly.
Getting back to the oscars just scanning over the list a few things stick out. Is "Letters from Iwo Jima" actually any good or is it another "just because its Eastwood we have to nominate it" situation? Little Miss Sunshine was cute and entertaining but best movie? No way. Thats cool Forest Whitaker was nominated, hes been a great actor for a long time. My earliest memory of the Oscars was back in the day when E.T. (Spielberg's finest movie in my opinion) was beat by Ghandi! Ghandi are you kidding me! That skinny bald bastard beat out the long neck bald alien with the see thru chest. I was stunned and still to this day dont understand how it lost. Another injustice was when Nicholas Cage whom i used to like won best actor in Leaving Las Vegas over Sean Penn for Dead Man Walking. Nicholas gave a good performance but Sean Penn's white trash performance was amazing. Still to this day its the single best performance I've ever seen in a movie period. As a matter of fact the last time a movie that actually was the best movie of the year won, was back when Braveheart took home the hardware. I know its a pipe dream but I can hope that someday cult and horror movies get their proper due from the Academy. Man wouldnt that have kicked ass if they had the balls to nominate The Descent or something wild like that.
