Ive actually stopped playing video games to get in a few movies. Is there any other director out there that can jump genres so often and still make quality movies such as Miike? He has once again did a movie that would normally be unexpected of him. He usually averages 4 or 5 movies a year but in 2005 this was his only movie even though he did a lot of tv work also. On average most of his movies are low budget but this one actually looked liked it had a modest budget. The best way i can describe this movie is mix a little Miike with a lot of Miyazaki with real actors and not animated. The characters and story is straight out of something from a Howl's Moving Castle or Spirited Away. Most characters are just make up and costumes but most of the baddies are cgi robots.
The story is basically about this boy that is the chosen Kirin Rider which is a hero that has to battle against the baddie and his minions made from junk that was thrown away by humans. I think it was trying to give an environmental message? Not sure but the movie was pretty enjoyable with some kiddie type humorous moment, such as this one moment when this little hamster was caught by the robot and was being squeezed to death the little bugger pisses all over the robot and causes it t0 short circuit. Finally the boy accepts his fate and kicks butt for the final battle.
Overall its very different but pretty enjoyable nonetheless. The main little kid actor is very good and im sure we'll be seeing much more of him. Also there is a cool role from Chiaki Kuriyama (go go from kill bill) as the sexy sidekick of the main villain. I would definitely recommend it for Miike fans or anyone who is interested in a fantasy type movie such as Never Ending Story. Beware its basically a kid movie with a few minor disturbing scenes.
