Jackie Chan's The Myth Dvd Review
This is basically Jackie's take on the whole Chinese fantasy epic movement thats been going on the past few years starting with Crouching Tiger then Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and most recently The Promise. Surprsingly he pulled it off mostly, while still being a "Jackie" movie.
I hope he stays clear away from Hollywood. After his last Hong Kong underrated movie New Police Story and this one i wish he would never do an American produced movie again. I know he cant resist the paycheck from another Rush Hour and i dont blame him but after that he needs to turn in his passport and just stay away from the states. Please stop helping Chris Tucker with a huge paycheck and force him go back to do another Friday instead. An actual good Friday movie and not those last two abominations. This movie also stars the always solid Tony Leung and newcomer Indian beauty Mallika Sherawat. Shes smoking hot and i hope we get to see more of her in upcoming movies and no im not talking about Bollywood productions but actual US of A movies.
Jackie plays a guy named Jack (not surprising) who's an archaeologist that keeps on having dreams of being a General in ancient China thats guarding a concubine that he falls in love with. Not really a spoiler but an easy observation is that he was the General in a previous life and hes having repressed memories that are coming forth. He has a buddy named William (Tony Leung) thats a scientist and he needs Jackie's help to go to India to discover the secret of a floating tomb of a deceased King. When they are there William steals a magical stone that makes the coffin float and they have to escape the guards that are trying to capture them. This is a cool Jackie sequence where he uses the tomb as a prop to fight the guards. William eventually escapes via helicoptor and Jackie jumps into the water and gets washed away to an Indian village. While he is there he and the Indian princess Mallika meet up with the Indian police who are there to arrest Jackie. This is where the classic Jackie sequence occurs. He and Mallika battle the police in a factory thats producing giant sticky rat traps. They jump on the moving conveyer and they are stuck and have to race the police to take off their shoes, then he has to knock the police down and use them as steppping stones, then uses his socks, shirt......its very hard to describe but its an excellent funny action scene that only Jackie could come up with.
The movie goes back and forth between his flashbacks and modern day events. The period scenes are pretty cool and actually filmed much better than what i was expecting. There is one scene where he has to literally fight and kill about 80 soldiers in a row. By the end of the fight hes on top of a huge hill of dead bodies barely about to move or breathe. He also has a horse thats trained to kick which is pretty funny when he rides it in battle.
The only real negative i have is the ending fight with the "baddie" was a letdown mainly because its so short. The ending scene is a battle in a large cavern with no gravity which has a couple of cool moments. The movie is still mainly a love story still and there are a few touching moments and Jackie actually does a great job in these scenes. I think its because he's in his native tongue instead of English for the majority of the movie.
Highly recommend for your Jackie collection. When hes retired and they have his lifetime achievement montage im sure you'll see a few clips of this movie somewhere in there. Speaking of retirement he still looked to be in excellent shape and only was slow on a few scenes and that looked mainly due to the skill level of the fighters he was against and not himself. I still hope the rumored Drunken Master 3 with Tony Jaa happens eventually. In the meantime, Long Live Jackie!
