Willie Dynamite
dvd review
This movie took me a little by surprise. I was expecting a trashy exploitation flick that was unintentionally funny and entertaining. What i got was a pretty engaging dramatic flick that starred a bad ass pimp and was directly very efficiently. It was directed by Gilbert Moses the director or the Roots mini series. It stars Roscoe Orman who portrayed one of the coolest pimps ive seen to grace the screen. When he first strolled in with his ladies i thought i recognized him but i just couldnt place where ive seen him. After the movie was over i imdb'd him and sure enough its Gordon Robinson from Sesame Street!
The movie is basically chronicleling the downfall of this pimp who is currently the #2 pimp in NY City. The coalition of pimps have a meeting and they dont like the fact that Willie is starting to gain so much power and they want in on the cut. Willie dismisses them and does his own thing. In the meantime he starts pimping out a new girl who gets into trouble early on and then she is discovered by a social worker who tries to get her out of the lifestyle. So the struggle goes on with the social worker and Willie and also Willie against the other pimps and cops. Surprisingly there is very little nudity and profanity overall. When the ball drops and things start to go downhill it stays pretty much believable instead of trying to be over the top like i was expecting.
Willie does have some awesome fur pimp outfits and a pimped out purple and gold car which get some good laughs but it still comes across as believable and not like a big joke. There is some great interaction with the cops and a cool foot chase with one of the detectives. There is also a side story about Willie's family and how he keeps his job unknown to them. By the end of the movie you despise some part of him but still in a way root for him to succeed. Probably because it wasnt over the top is why it doesnt get its proper recognition but its definitely a solid little film to add to your pimp collection.
